Hey friends! It’s officially been a little over a year since I graduated college and - wow! - a lot has happened. Last time I checked in, I was working on solidifying a daily routine for myself and trying to be disciplined enough to maintain it. Since then, I have moved cities, taken some amazing trips, and gained confidence as a business professional and adult.
Whether you are a new grad or have been in the workforce for years, I think it’s always helpful to hear new perspectives on how to stay motivated as well as tips to thrive in your career.
Let’s go back to where my love for WFH life began. COVID-19 had just hit and I fell into a place of loneliness and cringed at the idea of being away from my friends and stuck in my house all day. It was a hard time for everyone in the world in many different ways. I wanted to do something that encouraged me and helped my mental health from struggling. Strangely enough, I found that I had more success in my schoolwork. This was shocking to me because school never came easy to me. I was capable and determined to be a good student but I had to work for it harder than others at times. It was one of those things that just didn’t come naturally to me. I felt shame in that. It came to my surprise when my only way to learn was through online chat rooms and meetings; it then became easier for me.
Being in my own space that I created to be comforting and inspiring helped me as a student. I found I could focus better, take things at my own pace, and excel in my classes more than I ever had. I am well aware this is not the case for some people, but it was a game-changer when I discovered this about myself.
Once I realized this about myself, I started toying with the idea of looking for a WFH or hybrid job. When I decided to work for TBC, I was so excited for my first big marketing job and that it was a remote position! The first few months took some time adjusting to spending most days at home and on my computer. I collected some tips along the way that helped me work through such a transition from college to working remotely.
Remind yourself of your purpose within your job.
Chat with a co-worker for inspiration towards your current project.
Set up a schedule for the day, but include brain breaks; it also helps if some of those breaks are spent outside.
Give yourself an incentive to look forward to at the end of the day.
Set yourself up to work at times when you’re feeling most inspired. I have had to walk away from a project and come back when my brain was feeling excited again. Listening to your mind is a key role in this job.
To produce the most success during the day I find it very helpful to start my day by making a to-do list. This ensures I stay on track and can complete task in the the order of priority and check them off as I go. I have a few different spots in my house that I work best from. So find your comfy spot, grab your coffee, and make your to-do list for a day of productivity and success!
